This novel follows the story of Ella Grey, a young woman from a werewolf pack in Belden, North Dakota, who is the Alpha heiress of her pack. Ella is on the cusp of adulthood, with plans to pursue a business degree at the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management. However, her life takes a dark and unexpected turn during a visit to the St. Cloud Pack House for interpack meetings.
Ella's parents, Mitch and Emma Grey, are prominent figures in their pack. Mitch, a towering figure with solid muscle, is the Alpha and CEO of their pack's business, which owns vast acres of land with lucrative mineral rights in the Bakken Oil Fields. Emma, a stunning woman of Swedish descent, manages the pack's property. Together, they have instilled in Ella the importance of finding her true mate while also pursuing her education and independence.
The interpack meeting is meant to strengthen alliances with neighboring packs, particularly with the Minnesota packs, despite their reputation for being power-hungry. Ella is wary of the Alphas' intentions, especially given the arranged mating practices she has heard about. She is particularly concerned about the possibility of being forced into a mating arrangement with an Alpha heir, which would require her to leave her pack and potentially leave her pack without a successor.
During the visit, Ella meets several Alphas and their families, including the Goodwin family, the Anderson family, and the Lewis family. She forms a bond with Olivia Anderson, whose own arranged mating with David Lewis, the Alpha of the Grand Forks Pack, is a source of tension. Ella also encounters Carol Tanner, a friend who seems to share her desire for independence and freedom.
However, as Ella, Olivia, and Carol spend time together on a lake, enjoying water skiing and relaxation, a sinister plot unfolds. Carol, who appears to be a friend, betrays Ella by drugging her drink, revealing that she is part of a conspiracy orchestrated by several packs. The plan is to force-mate Ella to one of the Alpha heirs, who have "auctioned off" the rights to her, seeing her as a valuable asset for consolidating power and wealth.
As Ella's strength wanes due to the drug, she realizes the gravity of the situation. Her parents, who are aware of the danger, try to fight their way out of the pack house but are ultimately killed. Ella's connection to her parents, known as the "bond," is severed, and she is left to face the horrifying reality that she is now the Alpha of her pack, thrust into leadership at a young age and without the support she once had.
In a desperate struggle, Ella tries to escape her captors but is overwhelmed by the drug's effects and the betrayal of those she trusted. The novel ends with Ella's capture and the impending forced mating, leaving her future uncertain and her dreams of independence shattered.
