The story unfolds with the protagonist, Striker Cade, returning from working for a friend in Winterbourn. He is promptly summoned to the Vanderford estate, where he comes face - to - face with London Vanderford, the heiress of the Vanderford Group. Their first encounter is filled with tension, as London greets him with a cold and hateful stare, which puzzles Striker.
Two years prior, Striker had saved London during a harrowing incident. However, at that time, he was in gear and a mask, and after ensuring her safety, he left quickly for another job. London, on the other hand, had developed strong feelings of trust and dependence on him during that terrifying experience. His sudden departure left her feeling abandoned, and she had been unable to forget him since.
Linus Vanderford, London's father, asks Striker to be London's temporary bodyguard while he is away in the Middle East. Although Striker is initially reluctant, Linus's offer and his plea for help in looking after London prompt Striker to accept the job. London is less than thrilled when she discovers Striker will be her new bodyguard, and she tries to have him replaced. But her father's decision is final.
As time passes, Striker and London's relationship is a rollercoaster. London is in a relationship with Magnus, but their relationship is strained. Magnus is controlling and disrespectful, for example, dictating what London can eat. When Striker stands up for London during an argument in the elevator, it leads to a confrontation between him and Magnus. This incident ultimately causes London and Magnus to break up.
After the breakup, London and Striker start to interact more. Striker shows his concern for her well - being, like offering her a hangover cure. London, gradually opening up, invites Striker to Neke's birthday party as a friend. At the party, they have a pleasant time, and Striker gets along well with Neke's family.
Following the party, London texts Striker to meet her on the rooftop. There, they begin to share more personal stories. Striker reveals the truth about his biological parents, and London opens up about her difficult childhood with a neglectful mother. Their conversation deepens their understanding of each other, and just as Striker is about to ask why London seems to hate him, she vehemently denies hating him and claims that he broke his promise, leaving the readers eager to find out more about what she means and how their relationship will develop further.
