This story unfolds in the life of Ava, a young college student. Ava lives with her roommate and best friend, Tricia. Tricia is a complex character - sweet and caring at times, but also has a wild side, especially when her 'big sister mode' kicks in. One day, Ava deliberately takes a long bath to get back at Tricia for always making her rush. Tricia is in a hurry because she has an important test, and their little argument sets the tone for the day.

Ava's life is further complicated by her family situation. Her father's business went bankrupt, and he turned to alcohol, becoming an alcoholic. This has taken a toll on the family. When Ava talks to her mother on the phone, her mother warns her to be careful with the people she interacts with, which makes Ava worry that something is wrong at home. So, she decides to go back home for the weekend.

At the coffee shop where Ava and Tricia work, Ava encounters three intimidating men. The middle one is particularly captivating, with his charcoal - colored hair, hot chocolate - brown eyes, and a cold aura. Dario, Tricia's boyfriend, is also with them. Tricia hides in the kitchen because Dario doesn't like her working there. After Dario finds Tricia and takes her away, Ava's boss, Mr Williams, gives her the day off, mistaking her tired appearance for overwork.

Back at home, Ava is greeted by her brother Alex and sister Grace. Her father, who is drunk, hugs her and keeps saying "I'm sorry", which is a complete shock as he has never done that before. Her mother comes home later and is angry at Ava for leaving school without permission, ordering her to go back on Sunday.

Tricia calls Ava early one morning, ranting about Dario. She had lied to him about working, and now Dario is angry and giving her the silent treatment. Ava suggests that Tricia seduce Dario to make things right.

Meanwhile, Alex is in a bad mood. Ava finds out that his girlfriend, Gabby, has broken up with him. They meet Gabby and her twin brother Gabe at the park. Alex and Gabe almost get into a fight, but Ava intervenes. She encourages Gabby and Alex to talk things through. In the end, they seem to resolve their issues, and Alex is happy again. However, when they get home, they receive more disturbing news, leaving the story on a cliff - hanger.
